Denplan Explained: How It Works, Costs & Is It Worth It?

Updated April 2026 • 7 minute read

The short version

Denplan is the UK's largest dental payment plan. You pay your dentist a fixed monthly fee; they provide all agreed treatment as needed — no claims, no annual limits. It is not dental insurance. It is a private arrangement between you and your dentist, administered by Denplan (part of Simplyhealth Group).

What is Denplan?

Denplan is a capitation-based dental payment plan operated by Simplyhealth Group. It is the UK's largest dental plan provider, with over 6,700 registered member dentists and approximately 1.7 million enrolled patients.

The core idea is simple: instead of paying for dental treatment each time you need it, you pay a fixed monthly amount to your dentist. In return, your dentist provides all treatment covered under your plan as needed throughout the year, with no separate charge when treatment is required.

This is different from dental insurance (where you claim back costs up to an annual limit) and different from cash plans like Simplyhealth (where you pay upfront and claim cashback). With Denplan, there is no claims process at all.

How Denplan works in practice

When you join Denplan, your dentist carries out an initial oral health assessment. Based on the condition of your teeth and gums, your dentist sets your individual monthly fee. Healthier teeth mean a lower fee; more complex existing dental needs mean a higher fee.

Once enrolled, you pay by direct debit each month — directly to your dentist, not to Denplan centrally. In return, your dentist provides all treatment covered under your plan. If you need a filling, you book an appointment. There is no co-payment, no excess, and no form to fill in. The filling is simply covered.

Denplan administers the payment infrastructure and the contract framework. The plan itself is a private arrangement between you and your dentist.

What is not covered by Denplan?

Denplan does not cover cosmetic dentistry of any kind. This includes teeth whitening, veneers, cosmetic bonding, and cosmetic reshaping. Dental implants are not covered. Orthodontic treatment (braces, aligners) is not covered.

Denplan Essentials does not cover restorative treatment — if you need a filling or crown, you will pay separately unless you are on Denplan Care.

Emergency cover outside the UK is only included if you add Denplan Supplementary (approximately £0.60/month extra). Without it, you have no emergency cover when travelling abroad.

How much does Denplan cost?

Denplan fees are set by your individual dentist based on your oral health assessment. There is no single national price — your fee reflects your personal treatment needs and your dentist's practice costs.

Typical ranges in 2026: Denplan Essentials costs approximately £13–£16 per month. Denplan Care costs approximately £15–£22 per month for most patients, though patients with significant restorative needs may be assessed at a higher rate.

Your fee can be reviewed by your dentist annually. Inflationary increases are common. To find out your specific fee, you need to book an oral health assessment with a Denplan-registered dentist.

How to join Denplan

You cannot sign up for Denplan online. The process requires a dentist who is registered with Denplan:

  1. Find a Denplan-registered dentist using the Denplan website's dental practice search.
  2. Book an initial appointment — this will be a health assessment, not a treatment appointment.
  3. Your dentist assesses your oral health and sets your monthly fee.
  4. You and your dentist sign the Denplan agreement and you set up a direct debit.
  5. Your cover starts after a brief assessment period.

Note that not all Denplan practices are accepting new patients. Demand has increased significantly as NHS access has contracted. You may need to contact several practices before finding one with availability.

Frequently asked questions

Can I join Denplan without a dentist?

No. Denplan requires a registered member dentist to enrol you. You must first find a Denplan-registered practice that is accepting new patients, then attend an oral health assessment.

Is Denplan the same as dental insurance?

No. Denplan is a capitation payment plan, not insurance. With Denplan, you pay your dentist a monthly fee and treatment is provided as needed. With dental insurance, you pay a premium and submit claims up to an annual limit. The models are fundamentally different.

Can I use Denplan with an NHS dentist?

No. Denplan is a private arrangement. Your dentist must be registered with Denplan, and Denplan dentists operate privately. NHS-only dentists do not offer Denplan.

What happens if I need to change dentist?

If you move or want to change dentist, you can transfer your Denplan to another registered practice. You will need to notify Denplan, and the new dentist may carry out a new oral health assessment which could change your monthly fee.

Does Denplan cover dental emergencies abroad?

Only if you add Denplan Supplementary (approximately £0.60/month). Standard Denplan plans do not include overseas emergency cover.
