What is Denplan?
Denplan is a dental payment plan operated as part of Simplyhealth Group. It is the largest dental plan provider in the UK, with over 6,700 registered member dentists and approximately 1.7 million patients enrolled.
Unlike dental insurance or health cash plans, Denplan is a capitation-based payment plan. This means you pay your dentist a fixed monthly fee, and in return your dentist provides all agreed dental treatment as needed throughout the year — with no separate charge when treatment is required. There are no claims to submit and no annual treatment limits.
How does Denplan work in practice?
When you join Denplan, your dentist carries out an initial oral health assessment. Based on the condition of your teeth and gums, your dentist sets your individual monthly fee. Patients with healthier teeth pay less; patients with more complex needs pay more.
Once enrolled, you pay your monthly fee by direct debit — directly to your dentist (not to Denplan centrally). In return, your dentist provides all treatment covered under your plan category throughout the year. If you need a filling, you book an appointment. There is no co-payment, no excess, and no claims process. The filling is simply covered.
Denplan administers the payment infrastructure and provides the contract framework, but the plan is fundamentally a private arrangement between you and your dentist.
What does Denplan cover?
Denplan offers several plan types. The most common are:
Denplan Essentials covers routine care only: check-ups and X-rays, hygiene treatment, and emergency dental cover within the UK. It does not cover restorative treatment (fillings, crowns, root canals). From approximately £13/month.
Denplan Care is the most popular plan and covers routine care plus restorative treatment: check-ups, hygiene appointments, fillings, crowns, root canals, and extractions. From approximately £15–£22/month depending on your oral health assessment.
Denplan Supplementary adds worldwide dental emergency cover to either plan for approximately £0.60/month extra.
Cosmetic dentistry (veneers, teeth whitening, implants, orthodontics) is not covered under any Denplan plan.
How much does Denplan cost?
Denplan fees are set by your individual dentist based on your oral health assessment. There is no single national price — your fee reflects your personal treatment needs.
Typical ranges: Denplan Essentials: £13–£16/month. Denplan Care: £15–£22/month for most patients, though patients with significant restorative needs may pay more.
Your fee can be reviewed by your dentist if your oral health changes significantly. Annual inflationary increases are common.
To find out your specific fee, you need to book an oral health assessment with a Denplan-registered dentist in your area. Denplan publishes a dentist search tool on their website.
How do you join Denplan?
You cannot sign up for Denplan online directly. The process is:
1. Find a Denplan-registered dentist near you using the Denplan Find a Dentist tool. 2. Book an initial oral health assessment appointment. 3. Your dentist will assess your teeth, set your monthly fee, and register you on the Denplan system. 4. You set up a direct debit for your monthly payment.
This process means you need to be accepted by a dentist first. Some Denplan practices have waiting lists for new patients, particularly in high-demand areas.
Is Denplan worth it?
For most patients who regularly use private dental care, Denplan Care is very likely to save money compared with paying for treatment separately.
The maths are straightforward: if your annual private dental costs (check-ups, hygienist, and any treatment) exceed your annual Denplan fee, the plan saves you money. Given that a single private filling can cost £100–£200, a crown can cost £500–£900, and a hygienist visit typically costs £70–£120, most patients who have regular dental needs will save money with Denplan Care.
The main limitation is that you are tied to your Denplan-registered dentist. If you move or want to change dentist, you need to find another Denplan member. This reduces flexibility compared with cash plans or insurance products.
